Obituary for Mr. John W. Coker

John “Peter” Wesley Coker, 88, of North Augusta, SC, entered into rest on November 18, 2019.

The son of William Harry and Emmie Louise Coker, John was born on January 29, 1931, in Trenton, SC. Even as a youngster, John was a hard worker delivering papers on his bicycle in Aiken and during those pre-refrigeration days, delivering ice for iceboxes.  As a very young man, he joined the Augusta Chapter of the IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) where he worked his way from an apprentice to journeyman, and then to master electrician. After marrying Kathleen in 1954, they traveled north for his electrical work where they resided in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.  In 1962 after the birth of their firstborn, they moved back home to Vaucluse to be closer to family and soon planted roots by building and moving into his current residence of North Augusta. During these years, John especially enjoyed his hobby as being a recreational pilot. At the age of 65, John retired after working many jobs with E.C. Ernst, Plant Vogtle, and the Savannah River Site. He was a good friend to many and was known for his generosity in helping others. Among his greatest joys in retirement was sharing weekly Sunday morning breakfast with his dear friend, Craig.

John is predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Kathleen Delaigle Coker; two sisters, Lucille Cook and Thelma Vena; and one brother, Roy M. Coker.  Surviving family include his daughter, Sharon Lynn Coker of North Augusta; daughter, Rhonda Coker-Forrest, and daughter-in-law, Cynthia Forrest, of Columbia; four sisters-in-law: Jackie Chance, Mary Annie Odom, Elaine Long, and Elsie DeLaigle; a multitude of nieces and nephews; and his granddogs, Brickle and Brulee.

A graveside service will be at 3 o'clock, Sunday, December 8, 2019, in Warrenville Cemetery with Pastor Dexter Lambert officiating. Family and friends will assemble at the graveside.
